Clayton Christmas Parade Canceled, Alternative “Light Up the Town” Event Planned
Clayton’s 58th Annual Christmas Parade In Lights has been canceled this year due to COVID-19. Instead, organizers have come up with a bright idea to “Light Up the Town” December 5-26, 2020.
“After much deliberation and discussion, it is with great sadness we have to announce that the 58th Annual Christmas Parade has been canceled this year due to the pandemic. We’re excited to organize a ‘Light Up the Town’ contest and tour in place of the traditional parade,” said Chris Bogenschutz, President of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce. “With New York State COVID-19 regulations in place prohibiting mass gatherings over 50 people, we felt that we needed to come up with an alternative event to help bring some much-needed cheer during the coronavirus crisis,” he said.
“Light Up the Town” will be a self-guided tour and contest of light decorations at homes and businesses throughout the Town of Clayton, NY. Residents and businesses are encouraged to decorate their properties with creative Christmas light displays whether they are large or small.
“We understand the community’s frustration over the Christmas Parade and many other events this year being canceled. The Clayton Chamber shares in the disappointment; however, we must adhere to the guidelines set forth by the New York State. ‘Light Up the Town’ seems like the perfect way to brighten the spirits of residents and visitors during this challenging time, while keeping everyone safe and socially distanced,” Bogenschutz continued.
The contest will be limited to the Town of Clayton and prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded. Judging will be based on “curb appeal” as viewed from the street. Official entries will be included on a map posted online December 1st at www.lightupclayton.com.
Residents and businesses who wish to enter a light display can complete a registration online. Entries must be received by December 3 to be included on the map and eligible for judging. There is no fee to enter. Displays must be completely installed and lit nightly between the hours of 6 pm and 9 pm (at a minimum) beginning no later than December 5, and continuing through the evening of December 26, 2020.
